Zagreb is the capital of Croatia. It combines a vibrant, modern energy with plenty of old-world charm and graciousness. The twin spires of the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary soar over the city. Built in the late 13th century, the original Gothic structure has been renovated and transformed many times, but the sacristy still features wonderfully preserved 13th-century frescoes. Other must-see attractions include Austro-Hungarian buildings, St Mark’s Church (the colorful example of late Gothic and Romanesque architecture that features an incredible portal with 15 carved figures sitting in shallow niches), the medieval Upper town with the Gradec Stone Gate (the site became a shrine in 1731 after a fire destroyed every inch of the wooden gate but spared a painting of the Virgin and Child), Ban (governor) Jelacic square (the central square). After the tour, free time for leisure and lunch. In the afternoon, we will continue to Split—dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 12 Thursday, October 24 - Split, Dubrovnik

After an early breakfast, we will meet our local guide to have a guided tour of Split. Diocletian’s palace from the Roman era is certainly the main attraction of the city of Split. The Palace and the entire historical core of Split have been on the World Heritage UNESCO list ever since 1979. The Cathedral of Saint Domnius consecrated at the turn of the 7th century AD, is regarded as the oldest Catholic cathedral in the world that remains in use in its original structure without near-complete renovation at a later date. The structure itself, built in AD 305 as the Mausoleum of Diocletian, is the second oldest structure used by any Christian Cathedral. The cathedral was named after Saint Domnius, the patron saint of Split, a 3rd-century Bishop of Salona (a large Roman city serving as the capital of the Province of Dalmatia). Saint Domnius was martyred with seven other Christians in the persecutions of the Emperor Diocletian. Saint Domnius became the city’s patron saint, and the city’s cathedral (the Cathedral of Saint Domnius) was built in the mausoleum of Diocletian, the emperor who martyred him. A walk through the ancient city takes you through time, along with the great examples of ancient architecture like Peristyle and Gothic Palace, Renaissance portals of the noblemen’s houses, Baroque facades, and modern architecture superbly merged in the rich heritage. Proceed to Dubrovnik for dinner and overnight.

Day 13 Friday, October 25 - Dubrovnik , Zagreb

Early city tour of Dubrovnik, “the pearl of the Adriatic,“ we will visit medieval walls, historical buildings, including the Franciscan Monastery, the harbor, and the Basilica of St.Blaise, the patron saint of Dubrovnik. Return to Medjugorje for dinner and overnight. Dubrovnik Old Town is known as one of the world’s finest and most perfectly preserved medieval cities in the world. For centuries, Dubrovnik rivaled Venice as a trading port, with its huge sturdy stone walls built between the 11th and 17th centuries, affording protection to this former city-state. Dubrovnik is listed on UNESCO-s World Heritage since 1998. Drive to Zagreb—dinner and overnight in the hotel.

This morning, we will transfer to the city center for a guided tour of Zagreb. You will learn all about Zagreb’s history and hear many interesting stories and legends.
