South Africa is located on the southernmost tip of the African continent. South Africa is well known globally for its long struggle with Apartheid, transitioning to a democratic nation in 1994. Its formative histories, however, are much longer and more complex than the narrow lens of Apartheid allows. Contact between the Khoi and the San indigenous societies and the waves of migration that brought various Bantu civilizations south from West Africa are a couple of examples. Like many other African countries, South Africa is home to varied people groups, cultures, and religious belief systems; for this reason, it is often called the “Rainbow Nation.” It is also geographically rich and varied, comprising eight different biomes spread across the country, and is home to a spectacular array of plant, mammal, and bird species.

Zimbabwe is a land-locked country with ten provinces. The land was once home to one of sub-Saharan Africa’s most prolific and prosperous medieval kingdoms, indicating its rich precolonial history. It is believed to have gained its name from one of two possible Shona origins – dzimba dzemabwe (‘great stone houses’) or dzimba woye (‘esteemed houses’), the likes of which can be seen to this day at the stone ruins of Great Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe was colonized by the British in the late 1800s and gained its independence in 1980 and the country has since endured many socioeconomic and environmental challenges. In the face of these hardships, Zimbabweans have shown immense innovation and resilience. While much of the population lives in communal rural areas and practices a traditional subsistence agricultural lifestyle, there is an ever-growing urban population, most notably in the country’s capital city, Harare.

Day 1 Table Mountain

Table Mountain is an iconic flat-topped mountain that overlooks the city of Cape Town. The mountain has been named one of the official New 7 Wonders of Nature because of the incredible diversity of indigenous flora found on the mountain. Participants will ride the cable car to the top of the mountain, experiencing panoramic views as they ascend to the summit. The view from the top provides a broader understanding of the city's layout.

Day 2 Cape Town City Orientation

Take in the sights and sounds as you navigate the streets and learn more about the history and culture of South Africa’s “Mother City.” We’ll take you past the Castle of Good Hope and City Hall, through the Company Gardens to see St. George’s Cathedral, the Slave Tree, and the Houses of Parliament. Wind our way through the curio stalls at Greenmarket Square, the Bo Kaap's colorful houses, and more!

Day 3 Chapmans Peak Drive

Chapman’s Peak Drive winds its way between Noordhoek and Hout Bay. Situated on the Atlantic Coast, at the south-western tip of South Africa, it is one of the most spectacular marine drives anywhere in the world.

Day 4 Hout Bay

The originally small fishing village of Hout Bay is now a popular suburb of Cape Town. Over and above being a lovely family beach, it has many ourist attractions, which include the World of Birds, a township tour to the vibrant Imizamo Yethu, arts and crafts, boat rides out to Seal Island and some great, casual restaurants where you can relax and enjoy the surroundings.

Day 5 Cape Point Nature Reserve

At the southernmost tip of Cape Town’s south peninsula, Cape Point is a spectacular sight, covered in endemic fynbos and home to breathtaking bays, beaches and rolling green hills and valleys. Cape Point falls within the Cape Floral Region, one of the richest areas for plants in the world and home to nearly 20% of Africa’s flora

Day 6 Boulders Penguin Colony

Boulders Penguin Beach is found in the seaside village of Simon’s Town in False Bay, between Fish Hoek and Cape Point. It is home to the unique and endangered land-based colony of African Penguins. Those visiting this beach can get close to the breeding penguins from the wheelchair-friendly wooden boardwalk or spot wandering penguins and their incubators as they walk along the viewing path. Another option is to swim with the birds and enjoy the private sandy beaches.

Day 7 Robben Island

Declared a World Heritage Site, the notorious Robben Island prison is where Africa’s political prisoners, including former President Nelson Mandela, were kept during the colonial and Apartheid years of South Africa.

Day 8 V&A Waterfront

Situated between Robben Island and Table Mountain in the heart of Cape Town’s working harbour, the V&A Waterfront has become South Africa’s most visited destination. Exciting shopping and entertainment venues are intermingled with imaginative office locations, world-class hotels and luxury apartments.

Day 9 Robben Island Prisoner Talk with Lionel Davis

Spend an evening with Lionel Davis, a former political prisoner who served several years alongside Nelson Mandela on Robben Island. Lionel tells the story of how he and his colleagues ended up on the island, and you will have a rare insider’s look at life in the prison. Lionel shares about his interactions with other political prisoners who served time for their involvement in anti-apartheid government efforts and his journey since leaving the island.

Day 10 Bo Kaap On Foot

Take a walk through one of the most colourful and vibrant suburbs of the Mother City. The Bo Kaap is home to colored people of Cape Malay heritage, many of whom are descendants of the first slaves of the Cape and who were since displaced from their homes in District 6 during the Apartheid era. Lined with brightly colored houses and lively streets, Bo Kaap is architecturally vibrant. A walk through the community will introduce participants to the culture, religious practices, food and history of this area. Bo Kaap has a long history of resilience, the breaking of chains and a distinct cultural and religious identity. This historic neighborhood is set just outside central Cape Town on the flanks of Signal Hill and has been threatened by significant gentrification in recent years.

Day 11 Cape Malay Cooking Experience

Jasmina is a local Cape Malayan woman residing in Bo Kaap who invites you into her kitchen. She will guide you through a step-by-step process of making traditional Cape Malay dishes that are loved by locals in the community. Try your hand at mixing the right amount of spices and perfectly folding a samosa. At the end, you’ll sit down and enjoy a 3-course home-cooked meal together as you learn more about her life story and experiences living in Cape Town through Apartheid and the new Democracy.

Day 12 Babylonstoren

Babylonstoren is one of the oldest Cape Dutch farms. Set within 3.5 hectares of cultivated fruit and vegetables, the lush garden at Babylonstoren is at the heart of the farm. The daily morning garden tour takes participants on a journey from past to present, linking stories and connections between the Cape’s indigenous inhabitants and early settlers to life in the Winelands today, all the while encouraging participants to pick, taste, smell and touch the bounty of the garden along the way. Regular workshops are held at Babylonstoren by experts in their field in collaboration with the in-house team. There are three restaurants and a farm shop on the property, reflecting the farm’s rich inheritance and unhurried farm lifestyle.

Day 13 Djembe Drumming & Dinner

GOLD Restaurant is a vibrant, eclectic Pan African experience in the heart of Cape Town. A typical evening at GOLD Restaurant starts off with an interactive drum circle, teaching participants how to play the djembe to the rhythms and sounds of Africa. After a traditional hand washing ceremony, participants are led on a culinary adventure through Africa.

Day 14 Victoria Falls Viewing

Known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya (meaning ‘The Smoke That Thunders’) or Shungu Namutitima (meaning ‘Boiling Water’), the majestic Victoria Falls is a waterfall on the Zambezi River. Victoria Falls has a natural catwalk across from the falls on the Zimbabwean side, providing clear viewing. Another way of viewing the falls is from the air in a helicopter with bubble-shaped windows specially designed to make for good panoramic viewing. Participants interested in this may communicate with their ACTS Africa facilitator to make an arrangement.

Day 15 The Boma Dinner and Drum Show

The Boma is a major highlight when visiting Victoria Falls. It is located on the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge estate and open for dinner daily from 7pm. The evening begins with a warm welcome from traditional dancers at the entrance and the ceremonious adornment of each guest in a ‘chitenge’ (African print sarong). Djembe drumming, singing, dancing, and laughter characterize the interactive drumming encounters that wind down the nights at The Boma. Other activities include traditional face painting and hair braiding.

Day 16 Chobe Dinner Cruise

The Chobe Dinner Cruise is the perfect way to end the day. As the cruise moves upstream into the Chobe National Park, one can spot most of Africa’s Big Five as well as spot a wide variety of birds and fish. A Chobe Game Drive pairs well with the sunset cruise as one is able to view wildlife from both land and water.

Day 17 Zambezi Dinner Cruise

Cruising on a boat along the Zambezi River after a long day in the heat of Victoria Falls Town is the ultimate way to end an eventful day. Aside from being a time to relax and cool off, this sunset dinner cruise is an opportunity to spot some wildlife as animals come out to the banks of the Zambezi to have a drink at the brink of dusk. After the sun has sunk below the river line, dinner is served on the lower deck of the vessel.

Day 18 Other Victoria Falls Activities (not included)

Victoria Falls is an adventure playground, and the list of inspiring and adventurous activities on offer at and around the falls includes Helicopter rides, Lookout Cafe, High Tea at Victoria Falls Hotel, Zambezi River Canoe Safaris, White Water Rafting, Boat Cruises, Canopy Tours, Gorge Swing, and Adventure Slides.
